Pandit Prem Kumar Mallick
Pandit Prem Kumar Mallick is one of the most prominent Dhrupad vocalists of his generation alive today. Endowed with a rich, soulful and powerful voice he has stolen the hearts of music lovers throughout the world. His training in Dhruvpad- Dhammar started at an early age under the guidance of his guru & father late Pt. Vidur Mallick, renowned Dhrupad Vocalist. PanditPrem Kumar Mallick belongs to the illustrious musical family of DarbhangaGharana (tradition) and represents the 12th generation of musicians from his family that has produced many musical masters. According to him ‘Music is worship’: music expresses the feelings that words cannot, it’s a Devine gift of god given to the mankind. He has made great contribution to sustain, propagate and promote Dhrupad all over.
One of the oldest tradition of musicians since 18th century, the Dhrupad tradition of Darbhanga and the Mallick family-they both are one & the same thing. PanditPrem Kumar Mallick belongs to the illustrious musical family of DarbhangaGharana and represents the 12th generation of this musical lineage. His training in Dhrupad- Dhamar started at an early age under the guidance of his father late Pt. Bidur Mallick, the Dhrupad maestro. He had the opportunity of learning from his grandfather Pt. Sukhdev Mallick, the renowned Dhrupad singer.
The long-lived tradition of the Dhrupad lineage of Darbhanga is embodied in the stunning form of his Alapa (music), the incessant flow of the laya (rhythm) joined with the finest literature (poetry). His recital is marked for the unique, rich repertory of compositions, the use of Khandarbani and Gauharbani besides variety of intricate Layakaries&tihayees. The flawless manner of his bringing out the nuances of Ragas shows how the rigorous training has contributed in making him the consummate artist that he is. Pt. Mallick has been mastered not only in Dhrupad but also in Khyal, Thumari-Dadra, Tappa& melodious Bhajans.
He was awarded a Gold Medal in the All India Radio music competition by the then President of India in 1980 at an early age of 19 years as well as another Gold Medal by standing first at Merit in Sangeet Praveen (Master of Music) at All India level in 1985. He was awarded with ‘Tulsi Award’ in 1997 by the AkhilBhartiya Dhrupad Mela Association, Varanasi also with ‘Dhrupad Vibhushan’ from Dhrupad Kala Kendra, Indore in 1999 and the ‘Dhrupad Mani’ award by International Dhrupad Dham trust, Jaipur in 2010. He holds a Ph.D degree in Classical Vocal Music from University of Allahabad.
He is a ‘TOP’ Grade artist in Dhrupad Vocal, the highest ranking given by All India Radio & TV and also a well known ‘A’ Grade artist in Hindustani Classical Vocal of All India Radio & Television.
Pt. Prem Kumar Mallick is associated with some top-notch centers for studies of music for the teaching of Dhrupad vocal & instrumental. He has performed in major musical festivals in India and abroad including the Festival of India held in the US, Canada, the Great Britain, Germany, Japan, Spain, France, Italy, Netherlands, Belgium, Scotland, Switzerland and Denmark, enthralling the audience everywhere. With number of audio and video cassettes, CDs and DVDs, numerous awards and accolades, and a distinguished performance career in India and around the world, he is widely recognized as one of the greatest Dhrupad Vocalist of the world.
As a Dhrupad Vocal expert he has recorded an Archival Audio-Video recording by Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (IGNCA), Govt. of India, New Delhi.
One of his book on Darbhanga tradition and the four forms of Indian classical music is being published by the SangeetNatakAkademi (The National Academy of Music, Dance & Drama), New Delhi.
Outside India, his concerts have been recorded by Radio Bremen (BR), Radio Frankfurt (HR), Radio Belgium (BRJ), Radio Saarbrucken (SR), Radio Cologne (WDR), Radio Berlin (RBB), Radio Nuitwengen, BBC London, Radio Berne, Hungarian Radio Budapest, Radio Munich, Radio WDR3 Bielefeld and many more.
He is a member at the Northern American Dhrupad Association (NAAD), U.S.A as well as was an invited artist –in-residence in Berlin on the invitation of the German Academic Exchange Program. He is also in the Board of Experts (Jury member) of All India Radio, New Delhi. Dr. Mallick is not only an excellent performer but also a remarkable teacher with many students. He has spread a wide range of Young Dhrupad talents all over the world for the growth and popularity of this Ancient Music.
At present, he is teaching as a Professor in the Music & performing Arts Department of Allahabad University.
